Beyond Programming

Computational thinking is about looking for underlying computational processes and modeling them. The key insight of computational thinking: Sometimes, the best way to understand a system is to run it and observe its evolution rather than trying to “solve” it analytically.

We reframe problems in terms of computation. This means:

- **Algorithmic Thinking:** Breaking problems down into algorithms, even if the process is iterative or exploratory.
- **Formal Instructions:** Using the precision of formal, often computer-based languages to express these algorithms.
- **Simulation as a Tool:** Emphasizing the role of simulation to explore the behavior of systems that may be too complex for traditional methods.
This perspective invites us to see the world through the lens of computation, where simple, local rules can give rise to the rich complexity we observe.
